Haitian Women Impacting Change
Throughout Haiti's history, many women have played pivotal roles in driving social and political change. As Brazen Voices Haiti launches our initiative to amplify Haitian women's voices, we want to highlight three influential historical figures who can inspire the next generation.
Madan Sara - The marketplace women of Haiti, known as Madan Sara, are well-known. But they are more than just merchants. For generations, they have supported Haiti's economy and families. They embody the strength and determination of Haitian women. As one said, "We are the pillars of this nation."
Catherine Flon - Flon was a revolutionary heroine who sew the first Haitian flag in 1803. She represented the courage and pride of all Haitians fighting for independence. Her act reminds us of the flag's importance as a symbol of free life and human rights.
Mirlande Manigat - Manigat was an educator and political activist who championed women's rights and democracy. She stated, "Women must stand up to defend themselves." Manigat demonstrated women's capacity to engage in social and political change. She urges us to continue the fight.
These bold voices from our past offer lessons for the next generation. Brazen Voices Haiti works to give Haitian women today a platform to express their vision for a better future. As part of this initiative, we are launching a podcast series sharing stories of inspirational women making an impact in Haitian communities in Haiti and the diaspora today.
Together we can carry forward the legacy of these trailblazing women who paved the way. Let us raise our voices and stand united for a more just and prosperous Haiti.
